Sharp Camp 2008 Results

There were some problems concerning the line-up--they didn't have it official until the day OF the competition, and even then Narbonne wasn't on the line-up they handed out at the door.

It was actually a nice set up this year at camp, complete with bleacher seating which is a new addition to the competition. Only 4 schools came out to compete.

Summer Camp

It's almost August and that means that we'll soon be catching our first glimpses of the 2008-2009 teams! Camp is a great way to socialize with other teams as well as an opportunity to bond with the newbies/rookies/etc and give them a taste of competition season.

All my memories of camp have truly been memorial ones (if you haven't seen my yt videos) featuring only a few of my cherished camp experiences...

Sharp's Camp is coming up in Pomona, and I'm curious to see who is attending / performing.

If you didn't know already, I taught a few classes last year and I might and I believe we have some new instructors for this up and coming camp (I don't know if I'll be teaching also at this point..we'll see!)

But if you're interested in coming to sharp camp make sure to register on the official sharp website (beware the BEP intro on the welcome page).

There's also the USA camps available that same weekend at UCLA! (If anyone has more details let me know and I'll be sure to update)

Hope to see you all very soon!

Chatterbox & updates.

The Chatterbox is NOW caput.

I thought they would've pulled the plug back on July 2nd, but I guess it took them a while to actually take effect on our humble little chatterbox.

I have decided to not renew the chatterbox due to the immense opinionated outbursts that have caused--for lack of a better term--drama to teams of the 2007-2008 season.

We'll see how the summer progresses. I still want to do big things with the site...involving new layouts more content and videos made by yours truly.

"Pep Flags is a sport"

I found this post on this wordpress blog

This post is for a certain “kirbycurse” (see Blog Review: videotapegames). PEP FLAGS, DRILL TEAM, DANCE, ETC ETC ARE SPORTS.

Okay. You’re argument was that you don’t earn your scores, someone gives them to you. The only thing is: you earn those scores! Judges for dance competitions etc. wouldn’t score you super high if you sucked, and vice versa. Honestly, although not directly earning a ’score’, for example, shooting a soccer ball into the goal, you are indirectly earning your points through the judges professional discretion. If that argument stands, skiing is no longer a sport, nor is diving, gymnastics, figure skating… The list goes on and on.

Kirbycurse, provide a counterargument, or I assume victory! Others, agree with me or kirbycurse?

P.S. - A certain bandgeek, sorry to steal your idea. I’m not trying to do so, but your thinking galvanized this argument to mind, and it was never quite settled. Sorry… you can still say why you think marching band is a sport, etc. This is merely for argumentative purposes, not speculative. Sorry again.

I guess it just calls for a debate on..

..whether Pep flags can be seriously designated as a sport with the whole scoring by judges. What do you think?

Forum Poll

I was just wondering if the pep flag community would be interested in having a forum based website rather than this public style of a blog.

I admit there are some things that should remain exclusive to some of the people who check up this website. So a forum seems the most fitting a place to host our little community :)

I am planning on paying for its own domain name (___.com) and web hosting online. It would be more YOU oriented and there would be private posts for the special users. With a lot more organization and information.

What I would like to request from the community, is to answer the poll I have whether to start it up or not, I don't mind paying for it as long as the community is open to contributing to a website that has potential to educate and inform the rest of the community. :D

If enough people say yes, that would mean that there would be lots of moving to a new address with new content, etc. Let me know I really want to make more changes!

Youtube Posts

Hello everyone!

I apologize for the extreme lack of updates towards the end of the 2007-2008 Season, but I can assure you that I'll be catching up soon enough.

I would like to extend a request to the short flags community to help me with the next step. I wanted to sort out all the youtube videos by competition. If you could kindly comment the competition posts with the proper links to each school at that competition it would help a GREAT deal.

I was also planning to upgrade this website into a forum so it would have more organization and freedom. More info at a later date. Have a great summer and congratulations to all the new teams of the 2008-2009 season!

NO TWIRL FLAG EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

The Triton Twirl Flag squad is an awesome way to give back to the school! Plus we all love it and do it for the love of the sport! Who knows maybe you will make history and be apart of the first UCSD collegiate competition flag team!

TRYOUT SCHEDULE

Mon Feb 25th... 7pm-9pm RIMAC Activity Rm. A
*Basic info about the squad- info about performances, cost, tryout process, etc.
* Q&A
* Twirl Clinic - learning basic twirls and the tryout routine

Tues Feb 26th time TBA In front of RIMAC
* Twirl clinic - Q&A about the routine and more practice!

Wanted: Collegiate pep flag coordinator

Let's face it, a majority of us have already graduated from high school and the pep flag competition it contains.

Let's change that.

We're looking for ANY individuals with pep flag experience to participate in an All Star / Collegiate Pep flag team based at California State University Long Beach...

UPDATE
We finally have someone volunteering to coordinate our team: Loren Pendilla. You may remember him as being the coach for Bishop Montgomery Short Flags until 2005. If all goes well, we should have everything ready by this Summer for preparation of the next season.

A few have already made their mark in bringing pep flags to the collegiate level such as at University of California San Diego or at Duke University on the East coast.

California State Long Beach houses a number of pep flag alumni who have graduated from the top high schools including Bishop Montgomery, Carson, Channel Islands, Long Beach Poly, Narbonne among others. It gives the opportunity for the team to already have some knowledge in both twirling and performing.

All we need, is someone to coordinate these talented group of individuals into forming a single team. This includes discussing it with the CSULB spirit / club administration, recruitment, practice time, leadership capabilities, choreographer, etc.

If you're interested in coordinating this effort, or even just joining the team itself (it will be open to anyone 18+ not just CSULB students), please comment!

We want to expand our community!
